Historic Trees for Historic Places
Did you know that the 4 acre site that is now the location of our City Hall and the Quillen Library is listed on the National Historic Registery?
And, did you know that these two remaining, towering oak trees were planted nearly 100 years ago? What a rich history our small town offers to us if we choose to find it.
This tree, along with several others, was planted, along the front property line of Robert Quillen's homeplace when he moved to Fountain Inn in the early 1900's. It is with this in mind, that I encourage you to check out the rich history of our town and it's numerous historical sites.
If you look closely to the far left side of this pic, you can also see a yellow ribbon tied on a newly planted October Glory maple tree. This tree was planted by the Fountain Inn Garden Club in November, 2012, as part of the Veteran's Day/Arbor Day program. It was placed here on this historic site and planted in memory of PFC Justin Whitmire, a local soldier who lost his life in Afghanistan in Dec. 2011. The Fountain Inn Garden Club honors his service and his sacrifice with an engraved brick placed at the base of this tree and in the Blue Star Memorial Garden, located in front of the Ft. Inn Police Dept.
We are honored to share these two trees as part of the HTHP program. We will be identifying more trees during the coming year, 2014. If you know of any historical trees, please contact us!
